THE
HITS (Some of them)
GENERAL
CAUTION: No book is completely effective. The
following "hits" have a reasonably high
level of effective information and, inevitably, some
erroneous content.
1.
THE SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE,
Stephen Covey.....This is not a "career"
book, but boy will it help your career. Be proactive,
begin with the end in mind, think win/win, and sharpen
the saw are life principles. Highly
recommended.
2.
DON'T SEND A RESUME, Jeffrey Fox....Wow!
A simple, straightforward compendium of valuable job
search information. Ignore Chapters 12-15 and 40 (and
all references to impact letters, boomerang letters,
resu-letters, internet job sites, and all posted jobs
... web sites, newspapers, etc.) and the rest is good
stuff. Read this to get the "big picture" for an effective
job search. Highly recommended.
3.
RADICAL CAREERING, Sally Hogshead....This
book offers "100 truths to jumpstart your job, your
career, and your life". We agree. It includes a GenX
survey that demonstrates how GenXers are more realistic
about today's job market than baby
boomers are. Highly recommended
THE
BIGGEST MISSES (Classic
examples of bad career books)
1.
WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE?, Richard Bolles....Considered
the "standard" for under-$100K/yr career transitions
and written by a respected career pioneer, this book
has 8 great pages out of 400. Very outdated. Don't
fall for this year's glitzy cover. Ignore
the raving reviews on amazon.com. Not
recommended.
2.
RITES OF PASSAGE AT $100,000+ to $1,000,000,
John Lucht....Considered the "standard" for
over-$100K/yr career transitions and written by a
recruiter (read: This book is "recruiter-centric"),
we recommend you read the first 70 pages
and return it to the shelf. It contains a
lot of outdated info, especially about recruiters.
Not
recommended.
CTP
Enterprises is CTP. Chandler Hill Partners is
also Chandler-Hill Partners. These companies
provide career transition and job search services.
